Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is there a specific date on which we have to hold our race?
Participants can pick a date between Oct. 16 and 23 or choose to join our “global finale” on Oct. 23, when hundreds of teams around the world will run simultaneously.
Q: Does it cost anything to enter?
Entering the World Marathon Challenge is free, although we hope you will ask friends and family to make donations in honor of your participation.
Q: Where do the funds go?
Friends and family can sponsor the athletes and their teams, and the money raised will help Save the Children provide lifesaving programs for children around the world and right here in the United States.
Q: Who is Save the Children?
Save the Children serves impoverished, marginalized and vulnerable children and families in nearly 120 countries, including the United States. Our programs reach both children and those working to save and improve their lives, including parents, caregivers, community members and members of our partner organizations. We help save children’s lives, protect them from exploitation and assist them in accessing education and health care. Through disaster risk reduction, emergency preparedness, rapid humanitarian relief and long-term recovery programs, Save the Children also assists millions of girls and boys at risk of or affected by natural disasters, conflicts and ethnic violence.
Q: What benefits do participants get from running in the World Marathon Challenge?
When you support the World Marathon Challenge as a participant or sponsor, you’ll be inspiring children to take a stand for millions of other children around the world. From Kenya to Canada, Montenegro to Mozambique, and here in the United States, kids are taking a stand for the millions of children fighting to survive and thrive in their communities. This fun event presents a healthy and active way for kids to help other kids.
Q: Can I donate directly to a team?
Visit wmc.savethechildren.org to search for a specific team or to find a team in your area. Click the “Support a Team” link to get started.
Q: How much does my group have to raise?
Even the smallest donation can have a big impact. Athletes are asked to raise $10 each, which will cover the cost of a T-shirt and race number. To maximize your team’s fundraising efforts, make it a fun game where kids challenge each other to see who can raise the most money. The money raised will help children grow up safe, healthy and ready to learn.
Q: How do we fundraise for the World Marathon Challenge?
Team captains will set up each team’s fundraising page at wmc.savethechildren.org, and individuals can go on to the team page to set up their individual fundraising page. From there, messages can be sent to friends and family asking for them to help support the team. For off-line donations, the Organizer’s Kit has a sponsorship form—checks can be made out to Save the Children. After the event, checks may be sent to Save the Children, 54 Wilton Road, Westport, CT 06880.
Q: Why are children running?
The World Marathon Challenge is a global race in which teams of children from around the world complete a relay the distance of a full marathon. Kids can find out which team is the fastest and even try to break the marathon world record set by Kenya’s Patrick Makau, while helping to raise awareness about the urgent needs of children here in the U.S. and around the world.
